    1949 Martin D-28
    Serial #110527.
The D-28 known as the 'Happy Fats' guitar has been completely restored. You can view some of the before and after here. As I have been told, this guitar once belonged to the, 'Hank Williams of Cajun Music', LeRoy 'Happy Fats' LeBlanc.

Tragically this guitar was involved in a flood and ended up in pieces. Another 'luthier?' attempted to do some work on the guitar resulting in complete disaster. When the new owner purchased the guitar(pieces) he sent it to me for restoration. When it reached my shop the fretboard and bridge were missing, the top was sanded down, most of the binding had been sanded out or was completely missing. The back was off and in two pieces with numerous cracks. The inside was filled with thick mold and mildew. A large pool of hide glue donned the inside of the top and many other problems were present as well.

Today the guitar is all original except for the back-strip, back bracing, fretboard, binding, wedge, bridge and pickguard.

I do not like to describe instruments this way, but.. this guitar is a cannon! I have played and heard, in person, a lot of great sounding guitars. This guitar is a perfect example of those one in a thousand Martin guitars with that big, full, powerful sound that turns doubters into believers. You have got to be in the presence of this guitar to get the full impact and I guarantee that once you start to play it, heads will turn. The Brazilian rosewood is quartered and straight grained. The Sitka top is parallel grained and fine. The combination of the sanded top, straight bracing and new finish, I think, gives this guitar the unique punch that really stands out among other D-28's.

My buddy Gary and I were picking a little recently and here is some audio of the D-28. Salt Creek

If you ever wanted to get into a '40s vintage Martin D-28, this might the only opportunity at this price. In 1949 Martin Guitar only shipped 427 D-28's, but, due to its underwater history and receiving a nearly complete restoration this guitar is priced well below its siblings. The 'Happy Fats' history of this guitar alone would have made it a museum addition before the flood.
